Identify This Plant

This plant has appeared in our border for the first time ever.
I thought at first it could be a poppy so let it grow for a while.
No sign of any flower buds but it is growing very fast now.
The leaf is like a giant dandelion and when you snap one off it produces 'milk' like a dandelion leaf.
Not sure if it is a weed but I need to decide whether to dig it out soon.
Can anyone help me identify it?

I have just got a new app on my phone called 'seek' that can identify plants (and other wildlife) - I only started using it yesterday but it seems to be really good.

It's a poppy

Crikeyblimey · 10/04/2019 18:55

Yep. Looks like a poppy to me. Mine has no buds yet but they’ll come as the days get longer and it warms up a bit.

Thanks Crazy and Crikey,
That's fantastic news! It means they have filled a corner of the border and will keep the weeds out.
Thanks Oddboots too. That app sounds useful for the future.

I think it's Acanthus mollis, which also has milky sap. If that's what it is, it's a thug, and will spread, really hard to dig out too.

NanTheWiser Yes, I just took a look at that one and it could well be.
I will just keep an eye on it for now. Don't want it to take over.
