Peeing on the compost heap?

It's the time of year when I start gearing up for gardening, and was wondering if anyone else had heard of doing this? I was thinking that if Nitrogen is what plants are after, and it's what you want to help a compost heap break down the woodier stuff, then why not just use some pee. Not sure quite how to achieve this in practice in a way which isn't mortifying, but it seems like it would work.

Anyone have any experience?

My oh pees onour compost heap daily.

Harebellsies · 09/04/2019 19:48

I’ve also read that mens pee is better because of fewer hormones but this may just be centuries of male gardening bias.

They say that to discourage women from trying to sit on top of their dalek bin in case they injure themselves.
OH pees in the bin sometimes.

newtlover · 09/04/2019 19:57

it's common practice and easily achieved by women with the help of a bucket and a shed
the only issue I have found is that I suspect the sound of me weeing into a bucket is loud and distinctive, so I have to check there is no one in close proximity (on the allotment)

It can also help get a hot compost heap going and really speeds up the composting process a lot - especially if you turn it regularly.
I miss my compost heap - one of the things I really miss about a decent sized garden!

You could always just collect your pee in a bucket in your bathroom and pour it on.

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2019 20:24

You can add any leftover booze to the compost to speed things up.
Just pee in a bucket and add it.

I heard it was very good when speeding up the preparation process for growing in bales of straw so I can see how it would be good for a compost heap. Never actually tried it mind you.

rslsys · 09/04/2019 21:08

You can add any leftover booze

What's that??

MikeUniformMike · 10/04/2019 16:47

It's when people leave a few dregs in a can. It never seems to happen with anything I drink.

BeccaDigest · 23/06/2021 19:14

Get a stand to pee device such as a shewee. I love using mine

Billybagpuss · 23/06/2021 19:59

I’d totally forgotten about this, perfect excuse to finally order me a she wee

ppeatfruit · 24/06/2021 09:20

It's brilliant, dh has been ill and peeing in a jug. I've put it straight on the compost heap (without telling him, he's too prudish Grin ) the heap is heating up nicely!

Isn’t left over booze better used for slug traps?

If you’re peeing in a bucket in a shed, you can avoid any build up of smell by always having a couple of handfuls of soil in the bottom of the bucket.

It’s usually referred to as “recycled beer” when a bloke does it.

NeedNewKnees · 24/06/2021 09:36

Always do it!
OH says he’s “off to improve the compost”
