My apple tree has a weirdly tall bare trunk with the foliage up high (inherited from previous owners who surrounded the poor thing with leylandii and smothered it with ivy). I thought a rose could help improve the proportions but I'm not sure if the best way to guide it up. Do I just get up a ladder and dangle wires down from the canopy to 'hold on' to the rose until it becomes mature and strong enough to hold itself up in the tree?
