Help! What do I do with these weeds?

OK, complete non-gardener here (obviously ).

This is my front garden. Full of weeds. I’m thinking I need to pull the weeds up - I have one of those claw things - fill the holes with compost (any particular kind?) and then put some grass seed down.

Or do I just water and use a grass feed and weed killer?

I want to plant some low maintenance plants in the corner. It’s quite shady for most of the day as it’s in the shade of the house. Any ideas what would grow quickly and need minimum effort / skill from me? I’m thinking holly bush, Choisya but would love other recommendations.

Looks too shady for grass. Would you consider getting rid of it totally?

We got it grassed when we first moved in as it looked so awful before.

I’d dig out the larger weeds such as dandelions, then use a weed and feed product. Some weeds do go eventually through mowing. If you’re going to re seed buy a seed especially for shady areas.
Draw a plan of the garden and plot where the sun is throughout the day. Then you can decide where to put the flower beds.

I would cut the grass and then weed and feed.

Do that a couple of times during summer (as well as keeping it cut shortgenerally) and you should hopefully discourage the weeds. Obviously you can just pull out the big ones anyway (no need to make holes and fill with compost/ reseed etc, just pull them out).

Is there a particular weed and feed you use? (Sorry, clueless )

I usually go for Wilkinson’s own, it’s cheaper. Get the one for spring/ summer feeding. If you read the packets of each brand you’ll find they mostly contain the same things.

In that situation I would go for hands and knees and a vegetable knife.

Then fill in any holes with compost, sprinkle grass seed liberally all over the entire lawn and water in.
