Are these magnolia buds?

This appeared in my garden out of nowhere, is it a magnolia plant? I have a tiny 2ft one a couple of metres away that has remained the same size for 3 years but this one has appeared this year and is about 6 feet tall already!

Calling magnolia experts, do these look like magnolia buds?

I may well be wrong, but firstly I’m not sure it’s a magnolia, and secondly I think they are leaf buds not flowers.

Thank you, I had got my hopes up as a 6 foot magnolia tree suddenly appearing in my garden would have been amazing. Grin

They looked like furry buds and similar to the tiny ones on my tiny magnolia tree, but now you mention it they def look like leaves uncurling. Be interesting to see what they are

Looks like some sort of willow to me. Maybe post another picture in a couple of weeks or so, it might be easier to figure it out once it has opened more.

Hard to tell without a bigger picture of the whole plant, but it might be goat willow (Salix caprea) which arrived out of nowhere in my garden and got very big very quickly.
