Clearing ivy/replacing with new climber

I had some ivy cleared off the front of my house today - it was nearing the roof, where I understand it can be a real nuisance. All the stems are gone and the stumps have been treated to stop it growing back.

But what do I do about the stumps? Will I be able to dig them up by hand?

I would eventually like to plant a different type of climber; something less vigorous to just frame the front door and break up the expanse of brick at the front of the house. Obviously I need to tackle the ivy stumps and roots first...but I’d like some ideas and inspiration to spur me on. Any suggestions? 😊

The only thing that killed my ivy was Doff Ivy Killer. If the stumps are very thick then I would use Round-up root and stimulate killer.

Thanks Florentina1! I didn’t think to check what the gardeners put on the stumps, though I know they treated them. I’ll keep a close eye on them.

Did you dig yours out once they were dead?

No need they just rotted away.

I don’t know where stimulate came from it should read stump.

Ooh hadn’t thought they’d rot away of their own accord! Thanks, you’ve made my day 👍

I maybe did not make it clear. It rotted away after the application of the round up.Check if the people who cleared it used a root killer, if not do it every three weeks or so until it is cleared. I cleared away the rotting roots so that I could spray deeper into the garden. Try not to snap the living roots as the little buggers will multiply.
