What is this shrub?

We moved into a new house last summer, with a mature (but overgrown) garden. Now we've had a chance to clear a few bits out, and spring is here it's all very exciting to see what we've actually got! I've identified most things, but this shrub/bush is puzzling me. We've got a few and they're so pretty!
Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure it's a flowering blackcurrant.

I use the smart plant app. Just take a picture, of the app doesn’t work it out there is a group of Gardner who will

Pinkywoo - amazing! Thank you! I looked it up on RHS and that's definitely what it is. Apparently the berries "may be edible". Not sure I'll try to work that out for myself!

Fuzzyheadache that's so useful! I'm off to walk round the garden with it now!

Ps. Does anyone want a holly tree?? We have approx a million of them dotted all over the place!

That's gorgeous. Has it just flowered in the UK? (If so I will be putting some in for next year).

Wavingwhiledrowning · 05/03/2019 11:39

@user1474894224 - yes, in the UK (mid devon) and has been flowering for a couple of weeks in a more sheltered part of the garden. There's one growing up through a Forsythia which is also just beginning to flower and the pink & yellow combo is gorgeous.

I don't find the scent of a flowering currant particularly appealing, though they do look pretty!

Thanks

It smells like cat's pee...

According to my ds 10, today is Shrub Tuesday!
Was going to pick something to put on his plate while we have pancakes!!

CanIGoToBedNow · 05/03/2019 15:11

I cut some and put it in a vase in my kitchen once - stinks like cats piss. Best left in the garden 😬

Wavingwhiledrowning · 05/03/2019 15:58

I haven't noticed the smell yet. I guess we might end up moving the garden bench that's currently right next to them...

Should move it to the corner of the garden that smells like perfume. Although I can't yet work out what it is that's causing it. A job for another day (and possibly MN!)

You're welcome, they're one of my favourites!

The common name for this shrub is Ribes from the black currant family. Check it out on Google images 😀

It is www.hedgesdirect.co.uk/acatalog/flowering_currant.html

Hope it helps Smile
