Trimming fir trees

Ok I have 2 fir (I think!) Trees in my front garden. They aren't huge only about maybe 4.5 feet high but need a good trimming right down. Can I just cut branches off? I don't want to kill them! I'm a terrible gardener and can't afford to get someone to do it. Over the past few weeks they've lost their shape and I'd really like to make them small smart trees. Any tips?

I think a pic would help!

What did you like about their old shape?

Interested in this too as we have a massive hedge in our garden over ten foot high that I think is too high though the neighbours behind haven’t complained

A lot of conifers can be killed if you don't prune them right. Best idea is to take a sprig and go to a garden centre. Either walk round their conifer section looking for a match, or ask their advice.

Once you know what it is, you can look up how and when to prune it safely.
