I am super excited and now super scared. It's a half but it is like a jungle. According to my nice neighbour in the opposite allotment, there's a flattened shed under the waist high growth.... I was expecting some serious clearing and am not a total gardening novice, but I am v daunted by the height of it all!! How do I get it to a manageable height to start covering it??

Yikes. Sounds like a job for a strimmer first and make your way in gradually.

You can get very good cordless strimmers now, or hire a petrol one for the weekend.

Is there an allotment association? Ours hires out a rotavator for the cost of the petrol (£3).

I'm told there is a grumpy bloke who will tell me off for misdeneanours but is generally a bit rubbish. My allotment sounds nothing like your very organised one!! You will have to keep me posted on your progress :)
