Mossy, boggy slope behind garage..

Help!! As per the title I have a boggy, mossy slope behind my garage. I can't see it from my house but it's there and I want to do something useful with it. Whatever "turf" the builders put there has died leaving a mesh of green plastic string. Winter has seen moss take over. It's a dead space and I'd like to see it be useful to insects, animals or birds. It's heavy clay and I'm not bothered about it looking nice - what can I do to the space to encourage wildlife of all types? I have a water bowl and compost pile around there but can I do more?

How about some ferns?

Ooo that's a great idea - make a real sheltered wilderness.

There are quite a few plants that like to be in wet soil:

Thank you for the link, some gorgeous plants on there, I'd just assumed flowering plants would be a no no. I'm really trying to attract the right kind of insects etc and make my garden a less sterile space. I get wood pigeons, blackbirds and the occasional bobby little thing (a wagtail).
