Hawthorn cuttings

Has anyone had any success with propagating hawthorn from cuttings? Everywhere I look online says they're really tricky and to grow from seed or buy whips instead.

The thing is - I have a lovely red hawthorn that I'd like to propagate if I can.

Will it take from cuttings, or should I try an air layer? And what would be the best time of year for each? Thanks.

Have never tried hawthorn but would try usual methods of soft and hard wood cuttings. I tend to try them when ever trimming and cutting so at different times. It works for most. I did buy whips and have patiently grown into trees. They are a slow grower. If you take a cutting it will be years till you see some height. I love them though and your red one sounds beautiful.

Thanks for that #txtbreaker I'll probably try them a month apart until about August and see whether any take or not.

Height isn't a problem - not when you're growing bonsai trees!
