Noise Reduction in a garden

I'm buying a house which has a back garden facing a very busy road. It has a 52m long 3ft perimeter garden wall, which I want to increase to 6ft, but any ideas on how else to eliminate/reduce traffic noise in the garden please? I've thought about planting hedging against the wall (inside garden) although not sure which hedges would be best. I've also thought about installing a garden water feature. Any other ideas please you've found helpful? Thanks

How about bamboos and grasses, things that will create some movement and sounds inside the garden?

Trees .
Some evergreen .
Planted far enough inside wall that they have room to mature.
Nothing cuts out road noise like trees.

Acoustic fencing inside or on top of the wall?

Laurel works well to reduce noise. Its fairly cheap and grows quickly

I recall from a TV programme recently that the University of Reading has done research into noise-cancelling plants. I suggest that you contact them.
