Garden design and horsetail

Can I ask, if you have horsetail in your garden what have you found works well in terms of styles and planting? I know you can never totally eliminate it, but I'm at the stage where I've tamed the beast sufficiently that I should be able to start planting this year. The definites I want to have are a small wildlife pond, and a lawn.

Originally I was thinking of a country cottage style as it would tie in nicely with the wildlife pond. But I think keeping on top of the horsetail may make this a bit too high maintenance. Would I be better choosing more structural plants like grasses and ferns and putting a mulch of some description around it?

I realise I'm asking a pretty broad question here. I'm just wondering if anyone has any 'don't do this' or 'this worked well for me' suggestions I can use to get started.
