After 5 years on a waiting list I got a call today - an allotment is available and I have two weeks to view it and decide if I want it. It is 3 rods. The site manager told me it is in pretty good condition - which sounds promising but who knows. I’m a total novice and I have an 15 month old who would be coming with me, at least on weekdays. I’m going to do a bit of reading before I view it but am I mad to consider it?

I’ve had a read of the allotment thread on here but the discussion on there seems a long way away from where I am!

try it for a year or two, if you dont like it then you can give it up. Just dont spend lots of money on lots of brand new things whilst you make your mind up. i love mine, its where i go to destress. others find it all like too much hard work. You wont know till you try.

if i were you i would look at time saving plants and gardening techniques. things like no dig, mulching instead of loads of watering and laying black plastic/tarps over empty beds

your biggest challenge will be looking after a toddler and gardening. Can you get a playpen or is there someone who can look after them?

I love mine too. DS2 was a toddler when I took it on plus I had caring responsibilities for my dad with dementia. The allotment was a sanity saver.
I only cleared and cultivated 1/3 in the first year and gradually worked my way through the rest. I live in London and the Lottie is one of the best things in my life.
