Expert lawn advice needed!

Hi there,

I am looking for tips on how to bring back a lawn riddled with moss and weeds back to life.

So far I have scarified (a few weeks ago), overseeded and then put down an organic fertiliser. I think the fertiliser may have been a mistake as I think it has encouraged growth of remaining grass and weeds! My back lawn seems particularly bad.

Today I tried a different approach and went to work with my new fiskars weed puller. I now have quite a holey lawn! I have been advised to put down lawn sand then scarify again. Is this a good idea? Would be grateful for any tips or advice.

TIA

Lawn sand is an effective moss killer, but also contains fast acting nitrogenous fertilizer. Its easy to scorch plant leaves and stain paving with it. Usually used in spring.
With young seedling growth it may pay you to wait until spring before attempting to control weeds. Moss control during Autumn/winter is usually undertaken using a solution of sulphate of iron, which is effective. The causes of moss may be damp, shade, poor aeration. Virtually impossible to permanently eradicate it. I'm a senior grounds for a landscape and lawncare company ( not one of the ubiquitous and expensive franchise operations).

Thank you so much for your advice. I am a novice and trying my best to bring my garden back to life. I find it really difficult to decide what to do, as advice varies from different reviews, websites etc. I shall see what spring brings!

Thanks again!
