we have it, it is pretty , especially in spring and autumn, but ours is rampant, needs hacking back massively every year to keep it in check

No it’s not bad, and won’t kill the tree. It will make a mess when the leaves fall and it will need chopping back when it gets out of hand.

It's a Virginia creeper, lovely plant. We have one growing rampant over an old shed, at least I think there is a shed under there somewhere.
