When's the latest I can plant bulbs for spring?

I'm a novice gardener with a fairly overgrown garden that I've neglected for too long. I want to sort it out for spring next year and I know that September is the time to plant bulbs for flowering next March/April.

I have an incredibly busy month ahead of me work-wise and am not sure I'll have time to de-weed the beds and get down to the garden centre to buy new plants/bulbs. If I leave it til mid-October will I be too late? I really don't want to have a bare garden come spring next year!

I've planted daffodils at the start of November and tbey were fine. Make sure you get them deep enough.

Buy the bulbs now and store them in a cool place in case they sell out.

Tulips should be planted in November or even a little later if the ground isn't too hard

I've done mid November or even later in past.

Whereabouts in the country are you? I’m in the SE and usually plant my bulbs at the end of October, but winter comes late down here.
When I lived in Scotland, September was the latest.

I did mine in December last year: alliums, tulips, crocuses. They all came up fine Smile

September is traditionally the time to plant daffodils and October for tulips and everything else. From past experience I only ever plant them in October but you could leave it until November. The main rule is to plant when the ground frost or isn't forecast to be frozen for the week after planting. Mid-October is perfect. I'm currently putting in raised beds so I'll be planting mine in October.

The required depth is double the height of the bulb.
