Tree similar to hazel - edible nuts?

There’s a tree on our road that has nuts which look very like hazelnuts. The leafy bracts around the nuts are bigger, more ‘frilly’ and are a bit sticky when green. My children have collected a load of the nuts - does anyone know what the tree might be and if they’re edible?

Cobnuts probably (filberts? Or did I imagine that?) sort of wild hazelnut I thing.

Thanks. Looking at pictures, I don’t think they are cobnuts. Now realising I should have taken a photo myself, I’ll try and do that tomorrow.

They could be beech nuts - a photo is a great idea.

The leaves look like hazel/ beech and so do the nuts, I've never seen a mossy sort of case like that before, very cool.

They are slightly sticky when fresh. And my children pick them up and want me to hold them, plus stopping to collect approximately 100000 nuts...

I think they are Turkish Hazel, which are edible.
