I think it might be a cep and edible? This particular one is the size of a dinner plate. We have a cluster under a tree.

Can anyone identify this mushroom?

It's more than likely a Boletus Edulis or Penny Bun mushroom https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boletus_edulis

My dad was a keen mushroom when we were kids growing up in the 70's and had many books and an encyclopaedia knowledge of them but I don't.

If you go to the local library they will undoubtably have detailed books on the subject which you can borrow and read through to get more information. I strongly recommend you do not eat it until you have identified it using at least to references tho as there are very very few mushrooms in this country that are deadly there are a good handful that cause permanent damage and will make you very ill.

If they are Penny Buns? They are delicious thickly sliced fried in butter with some fresh garlic and thyme on thick Brown toast Mmmmm Grin

Ceps are best picked and eaten while young or just maturing. The dinner plate size of yours means it's mature, so probably;y best left to release its spores.
But if you've picked it you could make soup with it.
If you find any more, don't forget they benefit from a longer cooking time than most other mushrooms, about ten minutes to bring out their full flavour.

Thanks all. I thought they were ceps/porchini.

Second ID from my Polish friend who has been mushroom picking all her life so good to go. The one pictured is older but still good for drying.
