Berberis question

Do any of you know have experience of Berberis growing on a shady east facing bank. The soil is clayey, although can be improved. There are tall beech trees behind the proposed site. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm trying to add some colour in a drab area and provide an element of impenetrable security.

We have a hedge at the east side of our house which has Berberis in it and it grows well. We too have a some clay in the soil.
