Firstly apologies if this is a duplicate, thought I’d started the thread but can’t find it now....
Hope you can see the pics ok?!
Returned from two weeks holiday to find these shrubs decimated. I don’t actually know what they are, here before I moved in, but they are usually spindly, deep burgundy rounded leaves, lots of spikes usuallyquite ‘lush’ growth. Got back from holiday to discover they have been, presumably, eaten by something. Not a leaf left. So, a few questions for experts....
What are they?
What might have eaten them?
Can they recover?
What do I need to do?
Is it likely to spread to other shrubs nearby? There’s bay, laurel, box, hydrangea, walnut, yew, sycamore and ceanothus nearby.
Thank you for any help you can offer!

I'm guessing it is a Berberis (not sure which variety, there are many) and it has been attacked by the Berberis sawfly. The larvae can completely defoliate the plant quite quickly. However, it should recover, maybe not this year, but next year should leaf up as usual. Then you need to watch out for the small black adult flies which lay the eggs, between April and October, and spray if necessary.
They won't attack any other species, they are specific to Berberis.
I have had attacks on two of my plants in previous years, and they always came back the following year. Strangely, none this year!

Oh yes thanks just googled and it’s definitely some kind of Berberis, Thunbergii Harlequin maybe. Good to know it won’t attack the other shrubs. Should I cut it back do you think?

You could do, it might improve the shape. I need to do mine soon.
