Buying top soil

I’ve just had my garden landscapes and am excited about having a completely blank canvas to start planting up. I want to make sure the soil is in best condition before starting so want to buy some top soil but I’ll need a lot

Where do you buy top soil from? I was looking on the B&Q website - they sell massive hippo bag size bags of it - but the reviews are very mixed on the quality of it

Any top tips? Also thoughts on how much one should expect to pay for dirt?? Smile

Landscaping my garden would be a dream come true for me. How fantastic for you, no wonder you're super excited. I saw some in Homebase the other day and my much-more-into-gardening friend told me that their top soil was really good. Apparently someone she works for used loads of it and they were really happy. Just an anecdotal experience, sorry - I've never bought it and now I'm wondering whether I should have!

Homebase - about £3 per 25l bag

Thank both. That is helpful. I think I will go and have a look.

How much do you need? Travis Perkins will deliver 1m³ bags, it comes in two grades, normal stuff and finer for laying lawns etc.

Have you checked out your local tip? Ours has a shop that sells second hand things including bags of top soil for £1.

I got a load delivered from a local landscape suppliers, it had grit mixed in and it's been great for the new lawn. I don't think it was screened for weeds, but we sowed it with lawn seed immediately and weeds haven't been a problem.

Can't remember the cost, sorry.

I bought mine as lorry load, well 4 tons. Just Googled local topsoil suppliers. Ours I think was reclaimed/sreened stuff

We had ours delivered end of November (to fill in where trees where) and didnt plant anything, just levelled it. Come Spring I had the ,most wonderful Oriental poppies come up

Top soil is expensive. Buy equal quantities of manure, compost and topsoil.
