A lovely fruit tree for a gift

A very good friend has repeatedly gone above and beyond in recent months to help us out and I’d like to thank her with something special. She is a pretty keen gardener and cook and I thought that a lovely fruit tree would be nice. I have no idea where to begin, however. Could I possibly ask for some suggestions based on these criteria?

  • in a pot, and happy to stay there - the family has to relocate every few years so nothing that needs to be planted out
  • Something that will flourish in either a north-West facing back garden, or look attractive and do well on the south-east facing front
  • Something that will fruit in a Midlands climate.
  • Non-toxic for small children and cats

Budget around £50 but happy to spend a bit more for something perfect. I wondered about a fig but I don’t know how reliably they fruit here?

Very very grateful for any suggestions, and bonus points for ideas of good suppliers.

How about a dwarf plum tree? They can be grown quite happily in pots.

I might be biased here as I'm after one myself, but how about a cherry tree ?

I've seen one at our local garden company centre and it has been trained into a triangle. I think it ma be something that would be easier to move and place against a wall

How about a 'chimera' apple tree?

It's one where different varieties, say one cooker, one early ripening dessert and one later dessert are grafted onto a single rootstock. It would be in blossom over a longer period too.
