Garden clearance

I'm looking to dig up and remove the flower beds in my garden and turf over it to make a nice large lawn.

(1) Do I need to rip out all the overgrown bushes by their roots or can I just grind them down below the ground level and put 6 inches of topsoil over them.
(2) Should I lay turf or sow seed.
(3) Can I get on with the new lawn right away or do I need a couple of rounds of weedkiller to eradicate all the nasty weeds and thorns.
(4) Should I redo the exisitng lawn at the same time.

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks

dig up all plants( and give them to me)LOL
rotivate whole area
apply weedkiller
add topsoil to even out area
flatten by raking or rolling
apply layer of turf or plant grass seed( much cheaper)

thats what i did anyway.it was so worth it.

You could try pruning the shrubs back really hard. They can be quite resilient and send out new shoots.
