It has just flowered in my new (to me) garden. Because of the leaves, I was expecting it to be some sort of iris, but obviously not!

What is this plant please?

A banana yucca I think, although not absolutely sure!

It is a yucca.

Looks lovely OP.

Lovely to get so many flowers so young. Be aware these can grow quite big so make sure it is planted in a place you are happy for it to expand. Also the leaves can be quite sharp so if it's likely to grow across a path be ready for a spiking as it gets bigger.

Thanks so much for the information! I’d never come across one before, I presume it is thriving in the hot temperatures.

It is next to a path so I’ll beware of the leaves!

It's a Yucca gloriosa. I've got one too, which is also in flower at the moment. They're strange and rather magnificent but in my experience they don't flower every year.

I’ve only been in the house a year and it certainly didn’t flower last year. I might think of moving it in due course - would it be amenable to that?

Hmm, I'm not sure about that, MrsF, I inherited mine too (which funnily enough is also right next to a path) - I've been wondering the exact same thing!
