What to plant in troughs below window?

I have two metal troughs attached to the wall of the house - one below a window at the front of the house, by the front door (gets sun until late midday) and the other at the back below another window (gets sun from early pm).

Any ideas for something colourful I can plant in these? Hoping it's not too late in the year?! I am willing to water them as much as they need!

Also they are just the metal frames - what is it best to line them with?

If it’s hot you could try geraniums. They don’t mind the heat. Trailing plants like lobelia look pretty with geraniums too. Not sure what you would line them with. The garden centre could help you with that. I think you can get coin liners but I have seen them with black plastic liners which I don’t think looks so good. Hope tha helps

That should say coin liners

@Dodie66 thank you - I'd forgotten about geraniums! And they're cheap Smile

Was the word you were after 'coir'? Grin I think I know what it is, the brown 'stuff'? I will have a look at the garden centre for some.

Yes my stupid iPad keeps doing auto correct. It’s coir 🙂. Post some pics when you’ve done them

Bacopa is very tough, and flowers for ages.

I saw some stunning diascia on someone's window box the other day. Never grown it myself but it looked lovely. Mass of little fluttery flowers.

I would see what's available in your garden centre's basket section, they usually have those.

Trailing 'non stop' begonias. That's all I've put in my window boxes for the last couple of years. Lots of bright beautiful flowers with little effort.
