As long as you can wash the insects completely off, I wouls assuem the bay leaves would be fine to use. I culdn't really make them out on the picture. Any more details?

have no idea, sorry, but wanted you to know that I looked, would be interested if you ever find out what they are.

obviously I didn't proof-read, sorry about the spelling, amazing what one glass if wine does to you isn't it?

Twinklemegan · 24/05/2007 23:20

Aww thank you YBM. Yes it is difficult to see in the picture. There are several large (maybe 5mm across) flat brown insect things which were there all last year on most of the leaves - I wondered if these were scale insects? Most of the leaves also had small brown spots, but when I pruned it last year the new growth was clear. I have pruned it again this year - loads of new growth but already covered in little brown spots and tiny brown insects.

Our bay tree (in pot ) gets scale insect every couple of years. Looks like little brown things on leaves & black sooty deposit on branches.

Only thing I've found that works is washing them all off by hand with warm soapy water

Twinklemegan · 24/05/2007 23:22

Ah thanks. I'll look for any sooty deposits then. Good to know it's not terminal.

I can't go downstairs and look at my stash of bay leaves from last year in the cupboard as I may wake the boys, which would be a fate worse tahn death (will look in the morning)but am sure mine might have brown bits, I just wash them and chuck them in.

Having said that our garden is home to many green and brown scale insects but they are much bigger than 5mm...hmmm my insect book is downstairs, will look in the morning also...sorry that wine has gone right to my mind! Must be time for sleep i think!

Twinklemegan · 24/05/2007 23:29

I've just found some huge beetle larve cases in my veggie patch, about 2.5/3 inches long. Mo idea what they are though, am goign to keep an eye on them, the boys enjoy big yucky bugs sooooooooo much!!!!
