What should I do with these plants (with photos)

I wonder whether I should cut this heather back - it's huge (probably about 4 feet in diameter. It's finished flowering I think.

And something is eating my hosta, maybe slugs? Would feet underneath the pot help?

Yes cut back the heather severely. On the hills it is either eaten by sheep or burnt, then it pops back better than New the next year.
I have my hosta really high up on a stand, to defeat the slugs. So maybe a couple of rows of bricks, in a square, or something inventive.
