Does anyone else have hedgehogs in their garden? I'd all but forgotten about last year's visitors until I went to lock the shed up last night in darkness and found a spikey fellow on the lawn!

I left some good quality cat biscuits, snails and a dish of water Cake

Yes in my H/H under a huge Fatsia. There’s a ‘nest’ made from dried grass. I saw Mrs Tiggywinkle going into it. So lovely.

I'd love to have some in my garden. Sadly they seen so rare now compared to my childhood days.

GingerKitCat · 15/06/2018 21:12

That's so cute JT05 Smile

My compost heap got a bit out of control and I've been piling grass cuttings up next to it for about 2 yrs Blush I wondered if it might become a hog nest. It's in a nice secluded bit of the garden, also next to my fatsias as it happens Grin

The decline is so sad isn't it Molly. I notice the same with bees and birds, our garden used to be full of both in the 80s/90s. I garden with wildlife in mind but it's a slow process trying to tempt remaining wildlife back.

We have one although I haven't actually seen it this year yet, just the poo in the garden on a regular basis so I know it's been - an very few slugs!

Last year it used to come by the same route so at dusk we could watch for it coming along the yard and into the garden path to get any left over chicken food, we started to leave food out for it. Hoping to see it soon.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/06/2018 21:40

I just saw one now! Second time I've seen one recently which has cheered me up.

GingerKitCat · 15/06/2018 21:53

Yay!

Mine was trying to get under the side access but my neighbours have built decking recently where the gap used to be. It sat there with its nose practically touching the gate for at least 20mins and I felt a bit sad that it may have been its regular route Sad Unfortunately no other access to that side due to fence/sheds. I don't feel like cutting a hole in the fence (mine) as I don't get on with those neighbours as it is. Hedgehog has plenty of access to gardens to the rear and other side (hedges) which are much more interesting and wildlife friendly imo (and nicer nieghbours!)

I'm a massive hedgehog fan, I've got feeders and houses dotted around my garden. I've noticed a big decline in the past 7 years or so. So sad 😞

Photos or it didn't happen! Grin I luffs hedgehogs. Haven't seen one in YEARS though. One used to come into our garden when I was a child, and he got so tame he'd eat out of my hand, I loved his little snuffly nose! (Back in the day we weren't so clued up on the idea of appreciating wildlife from afar.)

userxx · 16/06/2018 12:21

@McFugget years ago I was walking back from the pub with a burger in my hand, I noticed a fox who was looking quite interested so I decided to share with him, he was so gentle taking the food out of my hand! Looking back not the wisest move!

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/06/2018 12:26

Fortunately, @McFugget, I took a quick picture :-)

@AssassinatedBeauty What time was the photo taken at? It looks really light.

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/06/2018 12:37

It was about 9pm last night, so it was still quite light.

userxx · 16/06/2018 12:45

He's a good sized hog, clearly been eating well! Such a lovely sight and so rare these days.

How lovely, thanks for the pic Beauty!

I'd love to share a burger with a fox, userxx, sadly I haven't seen one since moving from London. Come to think of it, they must like burgers because I once saw an urban fox carrying McDonalds bag in its mouth!
