What would make a rose bush die?

Pic attached. This is one of my favourite roses, the week before last it was covered in its one flush of very scented roses. Then overnight it started to fail, the blossoms all wilted first, then the leaves started drying up.

I wondered if someone had thrown something over the wall that might have killed it, but the grass around the roots is all very healthy, and the other rose bushes beside it (ramblers) are very healthy.

Very upset about it.

How upsetting for you. I’d suspect rose dieback, which is a fungus. I don’t suppose it’s been targeted by weed killer because the surrounding plants would be affected.
Unfortunately the only course might be to dig it out.
