Bokashi bins

I had my bokashi bins delivered this week, so I’ve started filling the first one.

Can I put eggshells in it? Is it worth tearing open the tea bags to empty the tea leaves? Is there anything that you’ve found just doesn’t work? I used to have a wormery and they hated avocado skins oddly, but I’ve thrown those in.

Any advice appreciated!

Yes, you can put eggshells in.

We got ours about a month ago so still getting to grips with it. I like being able to shove everything in the same bin though! :)

Thanks. Have you got one rotting down yet? I’m not sure how long it will take to fill but I suspect that is a how long is a piece of string question.

Yes we have. I think maybe it's been a bit longer than a month actually thinking about it.

I suppose it depends how many of you there are. I think it took a few weeks to fill it. Especially with a bit of squashing using the special squashing tool. (I drained off the liquid at the same time - definitely an outdoors job as it stinks!)

The second one is filling up so hopefully the first one is nearly ready to be emptied.

Mostly there’s only two of us. I’ve read that you can put the liquid in the drains to keep them clear so might try that.

Dense stuff like raw broccoli stalks have to be chopped right down IME. I'm not a fan of ours I have to say, they stink when you open them and the bokashi bran doesn't last long and so they work out quite expensive. Compost heap is way better.

Oh thanks cloud I’ll make sure I open it outside. I’ll see how I go on with it, it’s worth a try. I did find that with the wormery, I always seemed to be running out of the stuff.
