It has very glossy leaves, evergreen, small clusters of white flowers I think (they're pretty insignificant) ...? Thanks!

Possibly Pachysandra Terminalis? Is it quite low-growing? Good in shade, fairly tough.

Knittedfairies · 28/05/2018 20:32

Some sort of laurel maybe?

Liberation1 · 28/05/2018 20:35

Portuguese laurel by the looks of it. My front hedge is Portuguese laurel Smile

FantailsFly · 28/05/2018 20:48

Ooh thank you. It's not low growing - about 2m tall. I googled Portuguese laurel and the flowers look different - but I have seen it clipped into a hedge. I'll work with that and try and prune it into something less wild looking.

Sweet box?

Bluntness100 · 28/05/2018 21:05

Can you take a further back pic? I have Portuguese laurel and it looks very similar.

FantailsFly · 29/05/2018 08:07

Here is a further back pic. We inherited a few overgrown shrubs and I haven't got round to doing anything to this part of the garden so it's now even worse. Thank you everyone.

Is it an overgrown pyracantha (firethorn)? It's just about to flower then you'll have red/orange/yellow berries over winter (if the birds don't scoff them all!)

The idea is to train it against the fence/wall and prune of anything that grows perpendicular resulting in a nice, close shape covering the fence.

GingerKitCat · 29/05/2018 09:09

I've just seen the close up of the stems and they don't look thorny - ignore me!

Gulsink · 29/05/2018 09:20

Mexican orange blossom?

Bluntness100 · 29/05/2018 17:12

Hmm, I don't think it's Portuguese laurel based on that image,

SporkInTheToaster · 29/05/2018 17:27

I’d go with Mexican orange blossom, too.

Trethew · 29/05/2018 18:38

I think it’s Euonymus japonicus, maybe Green Rocket? Not Choisya, nor Portugal laurel which has red leaf stalks

EeeSheWasThin · 30/05/2018 12:30

I’m no expert but it looks like my sarcococca to me...insignificant white flowers rang a bell!

Photo of mine which looks a bit sorry for itself.

I think it is sarcococca or christmas box - did it flower in december/ january?

FantailsFly · 30/05/2018 14:23

I wish it was a sarcococca! But definitely not - I'm thinking maybe it is a euonymus. Or maybe a well-nourished weed. It's not bringing much to my party as it is, so I'm going to give it a good prune and see what happens over the next year or so. I really appreciate all the expertise here!
