Anybody on here grow bonsai and would like to chat? I have just taken up the hobby again after a few years and really only messing about the first time round.

What are you growing yamadori?

I have mostly seedlings going, in a communal pot I have a cedar, a conifer that I can’t remember the name of and a small seqouia going, hoping to get their stems thich by leaving a good root system. I collected them from between paving slabs in a car park in washington state. Also have 3 scotia baracypetala going, they are a year old and I did the first root trim a week ago, two are beautifully upright but one is growing sideways, think he might want a windswept style. 3 box and various erythrina caffra seedlings going, also a year old. A bag of firethron seeds stratifying in the fridge, they should be ready to go in the ground soon. The box isn’t trained yet, I have 3. Have just done a root trim and tried to create some jin on one side of a trunk. Just yesterday pulled two banyans from steps where we’re currently on holiday, the owner was too glad to get rid of them! They have nice roots already which I think would train into nevari with little trouble. Where doea your plants come from? I love collecting when we travel or visit sentimental spots.

What am I growing? A combination of a few trees I've bought as established bonsai - mainly from friends and club members - some houseplant rescues (mostly chinese elm), quite a lot that I have bought as garden centre shrubs and am training, things like lonicera, pyracantha, cotoneaster, juniper etc. I like looking at the reduced corner and often get a sale bargain. Too many, probably!
I am also growing on some pines, larches and birches I dug from the wild earlier this year. They have a few years to go yet, before they will be ready for proper training. The bonsai society I belong to arranges a dig with a landowner, and we get licences arranged and everything, so we have the proper permission.
I also collected some acorns fallen from an oak tree in a supermarket car park last year, and I now have a whole pot of oak seedlings
Do you belong to a bonsai group or club?

Ive got about 10 seeds planted been following instructions that I got with them and hoping for the best as I haven't a clue really what I'm doing. I've managed to grow about 20 plants in the house so far but they haven't done so well when I planted them outside. Hoping that because they are indoor plants these fair better.

I haven't grown anything from seed at all. It's much more fun to buy a conifer or shrub from a garden centre and play with that.

Ooh that sounds exciting!! Yes yes to garden centre rescues, most of my garden is planted with plants rescued from the reduced shelf and rescuscitated at home. Would you like me to bring you a banyan?
