Soil border round grass - drainage?

We've lived here 5 months and now the weathers improving I’m wondering what the point of this border is? It’s in an L shape round back and side of lawn.

Previous owners seemed like keen gardeners but there’s not a flower in there, so is it for drainage purposes? It’s now gathering weeds...

I doubt it's for drainage, but it makes mowing easier, as a mower can't cut up against the wall. You could fill it with pea gravel, but weeds will still find their way in.

Ah that makes sense! There are 2 other lawn areas in the garden (separated by paths and flower beds) and they don’t have this border, but they’re not against walls.
