New Hornbeam hedge

Planted 2 years ago and now looking very healthy and gorgeous with the new green leaves.
I've tried googling how to prune it but don't quite understand the answers. Some plants have a single very long leader shoot which reaches about 6' with the rest of the plant much shorter. Most of the plants though have just grown sideways and have no obvious leader.
I feel it might benefit from a bit of pruning now to encourage side shoots while it's in full growth?
Should I hold back or get the secateurs?

Taking out the leader should encourage side shoots, giving greater density long term. Probably best done when the sap is down over winter, or early spring.
