I want to replace a deck, any ideas for what I could do instead?

When we bought this house 8 years ago it came with a deck outside the kitchen back door/dining room double doors. It's still in ok condition but I've never really been fond of decks (unless they are attached to a log cabin on a steep slope surrounded by loads of trees). I was going to just leave it there as we were planning on selling the house in the next year or so, but plans have changed and we will probably be here for another decade so I would like to change it for something more attractive, but I don't know what.

The thing that I like about it is that it's level with the doors, so there's no step down. But I don't think I could raise the ground level as it might breach the damp-proof course, so I would need some sort of step down.

I've googled for pictures but haven't found anything that particularly interests me. Any ideas?

Decks like this usually hide uneven slabs or concrete. ( I’ve done it myself Blush in the past)
Now I’d rip it up and lay an appropriate patio, with a step down.
