ok, so i picked them [stones] all out of the veggie beds, raked over the soli having first dug i ooodles of farmyard manure. Who keeps putting them back in? Every time it rains there are more and more. Is it just me?

Oh the arguments we used to have in our family about this ..... I think the general conclusion was -

  1. You dig soil and remove stones therefore reducing the level and actual vol of soil. However, because of air in soil the level of soil looks same or even higher than before

  2. Rain falls, causing soil to fill in air pockets. Thus the level of soil drops so stones lower down in soil are now visible

However, I prefer the explanation that my dad used to give that they crawled back into the garden overnight because they were homesick. No wonder I'm screwed up.

Or have your neighbours been chucking theirs into your garden?
