Complete novice here.. how do I make my grass green?

I’ve cut the grass today, and instead of the lovely neat green garden I was expecting, I have clumpy, sad yellow grass.

I honestly miss the slightly overgrown but bright green canvas I had. It was the same last year but the grass was very overgrown and we only mowed it the once as it was toward the end of the season.

Will it eventually be lovely again the more I mow?

Try not to worry; it should pick up. If it was the first cut of the year and you cut it quite short this can happen. You can give it a feed with lawn food (or weed and feed) and a water if it doesn't green up within a few days.

You may have cut too much off at once. General rule is to only remove a third of the leaf at any one time. If you don't want vigorous growth, apply lawn sand which has a low percentage of nitrogen and iron to kill the moss.
