Evergreen climber for container? With pic

Wise MN gardenistas, is there an evergreen climber I can use for this space (on a trellis above bin store)?

It will have to be happy in a container, and ideally evergreen with flowers. The area faces east so gets morning sun; not much afternoon sun due to houses close around.

I was thinking of a star jasmine, but it would be good to hear any other suggestions.

Ceanothus can be made to climb, they're evergreen and have lovely blue/purple flowers, but don't tolerate cold winds very well.

A combination of an evergreen (which tend not to be very vigorous or exciting) and something like a rambler rose would be nice.

Whatever you have you'll need big, deep multiple pots for that area.

Evergreen honeysuckle or evergreen clematis.

Thanks both, I'll look up those plants!

OF, that's a great idea to mix an evergreen with a rose. I hadn't thought of that. Would a rose need lots of deadheading / care? Just that the trellis is pretty awkward to access.

My star jasmine seems to prefer full sun, the one in less sun isn't very vigorous, so it might take a while to cover this space.

Clematis cirrhosa is evergreen and grows very quickly, but may not flower if it only receives morning sunlight.

Evergreen honeysuckle (I have just planted halliana in a similar spot) might work well or maybe Passiflora caerulea?

Love your bin store!

Trachelospermum jasminiodes

Thanks again to everyone who responded to my question!

We went with JT05's recommendation for an evergreen clematis and got a Clematis armandii, here's a photo of it now installed.

We have a star jasmine on another trellis. It gets lots of sun but is still a slow grower.

Oh I do hope it grows well! 😁

Looks great @SugarKelp and it should cover the area quite quickly. Can I be cheeky and ask how you get on with the rolling type of cat proofing? About to do a new area for the cats and considering this type rather than the brackets.

SugarKelp · 07/05/2018 19:31

Thanks Fuchsia!

Our cat isn't an escape artist so we haven't seen the rollers in action (installed since August last year), but it looks like it'll do the job. The horizontal trellis is part of the system to stop the cat jumping onto the bin store and over the fence. The man who installed it was very good at assessing where a cat might get out. He also boarded up a narrow space between the fence and our shed where a cat could get stuck.

The cat rollers look great, really happy with how they look, but as you know are on the expensive side. Worth it though for peace of mind. Our cat is quite trusting and not very street savvy!

Thank you! Glad they’re working for your cat and yes they are expensive but you can’t put a price on peace of mind can you Smile
