Dahlias & Salvia together?

I'm dreaming of summer, and inspired by this Sarah Raven container, I'm thinking about growing dahlias with some salvia (the more delicate microphylla or jamesis types).

I've never grown Dahlias before... if I want to pair them in a (large) container, do I plant the dahlia tubers first and wait for them to grow before adding the salvia? Or should I start the dahlias in a small pot and then move them to their final 'home' once they're bigger.

Any advice is welcome!

This time of year you can do either. Personally, as I am a lazy gardener, I would put them in the pot now. Dahlias are dead easy, don’t over water while they have very little growth, gradually increase the watering as the top growth gets bigger.

For a moment, I thought this was a baby name thread ...

Thanks AstrantiaMajor , I'm also a lazy gardener so dead easy sounds perfect. I'll put them straight in the pot.
