You are supposed to balance out browns and greens so that it doesn't get too slimy but still breaks down. Browns are paper, card (eg loo roll tubes), etc. Greens are veg peelings, grass cuttings etc.

Be warned though that ours is taking forever. We have had it since last Easter and put tons of stuff on and still only 1/3 full.

I think there are lots of veg that can be planted now. I am new to this as well but have planted carrots from seed and also some beans. I have bought some cauliflower seedlings from the garden centre just to give myself a head start and have something actually growing. I planted some rocket from seed earlier in the year and have tons of it to go into the ground now. Also what about strawberries, these are easy and lovely.

Wee on it (or get a man to do it...its easier for them)

I'm just starting out too...but I think rocket, salad, raddish, spinach can go in whenever. You could buy a couple of little tomato plants and get going with them.

back to compost...try and avoid putting too many grass cuttings on it, they tend to make it slimy. As Bozza said, loo roll tubes are good, as are shredded paper and egg boxes, as they add air. I was also told not to put too many potato peelings on...not sure why.
