When are birds nests active? Gutters and trees...

I don't know if there is a precise answer for this, I've left it late in hoping to arrange for some trees to be cut down in the garden, but if I'm unable to see any nests (but they might be there) what should I do?

Same with gutters, I can hear a brooding pigeon noise above my window where the gutter is - if I arrange for someone to clean the gutters, what is the likelihood of a nest being up there, what then? Do I have to pay them while they not touch any of it?

I should have done this in the winter time I know.

Official nesting season is 1 March - 1 September. We got our beech hedge done just before the pigeons returned.
