Compost & sawdust pellet cat litter...

...can you 'sh*t-pick' (dh's phrase)the cat litter, then dump the litter into the compost heap?

We always wear gloves to take stuff out the bottom of the compost bin, & the cats crap in the borders anyway, so I don't see why not? Is it any different from gerbil bedding, really?

feaces should not be used in a compost heap afaik.

No indeed! I mean if one were to fish out the poo, bag & bin it, then tip the remaining litter into the compost?

It just seems mildly daft to be landfilling this sort of cat litter - basically, it comes as pellets & collapses into sawdust when wee'd on.

That I don't know!

I've been wondering about this myself as I also take out the poo but then get left with what is really just a tray full of damp sawdust. I haven't put any in the compost bin yet but have been tempted.

Well, we've decided to get an extra compost bin & go for it - that way each full bin should have a minimum of 6 months before being emptied.

Honestly can't see why not. If cat wee IS any more toxic than say, gerbil wee (& you're encouraged to compost rodent bedding) then all I can say is every inch of our garden has so far survived being wee'd on!

This should get us down to one bin bag/week of actual bin lorry rubbish

I compost it. The nitrogen in the urine seems to speed up the composting, and the sawdust gives the compost a lovely texture.
