Clueless about Clematis

I have a few different kids of Clematis in my garden, most only planted last year but I have one which is a couple of years old growing up my fence which is all brown and crispy. I can't remember what kind it is but I think it flowers in August, is is dead, should I cut it back or should I leave it alone?

Oh the flowers are purple with a kind of spiky centre of that helps.

That's really helpful, thank you! I very nearly cut the whole thing back down to the ground, I'm so pleased I hesitated.
