Is seed compost really necessary? What's the advantage? I have some normal compost/potting soil. Can't I just use that to start my seeds??

Seed compost is finer than general purpose stuff and has some vermiculite added.
I often start seeds in general purpose compost and never noticed a marked difference in gemination rates.
