Okay, my potatos are coming along nicely but how to I know when to pull them up? Do they have to get flowers, then die off?

That's exactly what they do! And you can leave them in for ages unless you live in slug-hell. It takes about 3 months I think, from planting to eating.

when you think they should be ready grub around in the earth and find them with your hands - lovely feeling!
