Borders to grass?

We've recently moved house and new house has quite a big garden. We'd like to reduce the amount of weed if we need to do by replacing some of the borders with grass. Is this easy to do? Thanks

I did this last year as we had flower borders between 3-5 metres deep across the garden boundary.
In theory it is relatively easy to do - no particular skill needed but it's hard work with all the digging out especially if some of the shrubs are large and established. Then comes levelling....urgh, get a rotavator!
I would say ask as many friends/family if they want plants to come and collect, we got rid of masses this way, they dug them out and I didn't need to feel bad killing off loads of plants!

The one thing I didn't account for is the bulbs and I can see the bloody things popping up through the grass now.... so each time you see some over the next couple of months dig them out

To avoid settlement of the soil once you have grassed the beds over, really heel the soil in by walking like a penguin on just your heels. Then rake lightly and repeat at a 90 degrees change of direction.
