Gardening book recommendations?

We've just bought a place with a garden that's basically just a big lawn. I'd really like to do something a bit more interesting with it but don't really know much about gardening.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a basic book with what times to plant bulbs, how to propagate, what soil conditions for plants etc.? I really don't know much, so something that starts from the basics would be good!

I'd like to plant some climbers, some bushes, maybe lavender and daisies as well around the edge, and have a seat somewhere, and make it somewhere nice to hang out (but preferably without huge amounts of work to be done all the time since we have work and kids).

The RHS is good for info on individual plants. The book in the pic is quite good as it gives some basic info on the design and horticulture sides of things.

I say this a lot, but I really like the RHS Gardening Through the Year book. (I was given it when I first ended up with a garden and no idea what to do!)

It sets out a month-by-month guide of what needs to be done and how, and which plants look good for each month. Worth a look!

'How To Garden' by Alan Titchmarsh is another helpful one, and the 'Expert' series of books by Dr DG Hessayon cover different topics very well.
