can i treat it myself? or do i have to get the experts in? they seem to be living under the patio type thing

If you use pesticides, it can contaminate the honey which can then be collected by other bees because it will remain in the nest. This is then taken to other nests and may pass into the food chain. Actually, just looked and the article explains all that!

I contacted a local beekeeper when we moved into this house as I thought we had a problem round the back of the shed but we didn't. He was very helpful though.

As SueW says, your local bee people will move them if they can - I got hold of ours via the council.
