Can anyone recommend a good book to help me know what to do with different plants at different times of the year (pruning, dead heading etc)?

The Gardener's World website is great for this or their monthly magazine could be helpful. They have a section that tells you 'what to do this month' and you can also look up specific plants on the website to see what their requirements are throughout the year. They also have a forum that is really helpful for asking gardening questions and you can even 'ask an expert'.
You can check that site and the RHS site for book recommendations as well if you prefer.

The RHS Gardening Through the Year book is lovely. It's divided into months, and each month has a list of what you should be doing, and shows plants that look good for each month.
